đ The Story of Google's Beginning: From Garage Startup to Global Giant

đ§ The Idea: Back in Stanford (1995–1996)
In 1995, Larry Page, a 22-year-old computer science student, visited Stanford University during a campus tour. There, he met another brilliant student, Sergey Brin, who was assigned to show him around.
At first, the two didn't get along much — they had different views and often debated. But over time, their shared passion for solving big problems and building smart systems brought them together.
They were fascinated by the idea of organizing the massive information available on the internet.
đ The Problem They Wanted to Solve
At that time (late '90s), the internet was growing rapidly, but search engines were primitive. Most simply looked for keywords, not relevance or quality.
Larry and Sergey believed that a better search engine could be built — one that ranked pages based on how many other pages linked to them. They called this idea “PageRank”, and it became the foundation of Google.
đ ī¸ Building the First Version (1996–1998)
-
In 1996, they built a project called "BackRub", which ran on Stanford’s servers.
-
It crawled the web and ranked pages based on backlinks.
-
Soon, it became so popular that it started slowing down Stanford’s network!
Realizing its potential, they renamed it to Google — a play on the word "googol" (a 1 followed by 100 zeros), reflecting their goal to organize vast amounts of information.
đ Starting in a Garage (1998)
-
In 1998, they moved into a garage in Menlo Park, California.
-
The garage belonged to Susan Wojcicki (who later became YouTube’s CEO).
-
They launched Google.com with a simple interface and blazing-fast results.
People loved it. Within weeks, word-of-mouth spread, and traffic exploded.
đ° Getting Funding and Going Big
Larry and Sergey tried to sell Google to other companies (like Yahoo!) for $1 million — but everyone declined.
Then, in August 1998, Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, saw a demo and wrote them a $100,000 check on the spot.
With that investment, they officially incorporated Google Inc. on September 4, 1998.
đ Growth, Innovation & Domination
By 2000, Google was handling over 100 million searches a day.
They launched:
-
Google Ads (revolutionizing online advertising)
-
Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube (acquired in 2006), and Android OS
The company went public in 2004, making Larry and Sergey billionaires.
đ Today: More Than a Search Engine
Now, Google is more than a search engine. It's the core of Alphabet Inc., with products like:
-
Android
-
Google Cloud
-
Google Docs, Drive, Meet
-
YouTube
-
Google AI (Bard, Gemini)
And it continues to shape the future of AI, quantum computing, and more.
đĄ Moral of the Story
Two students with a big idea, no money, and a garage changed the world.
The story of Google proves that:
-
Innovation often starts small
-
Solving a real problem creates real impact
-
Technology, when used wisely, can change billions of lives
