আমরা ঘুমকে প্রায়ই অবহেলা করি। ভাবি, একটু কম ঘুম হলে তেমন কিছু হবে না।

এন্টিবায়োটিক খাওয়ার কিছু নিয়ম আছে। একটা নির্দিষ্ট ডোজে, একটা নির্দিষ্ট মেয়াদ পর্যন্ত এন্টিবায়োটিক খেতে হয়। না খেলে যেটা হতে পারে সেটাকে বলা হয় "এন্টিবায়োটিক রেজিসটেন্স''।

ধরুন, আমার দেহে এক লক্ষ ব্যাকটেরিয়া আছে। এগুলোকে মারার জন্য আমার ১০টা এম্পিসিলিন খাওয়া দরকার। এম্পিসিলিন এক প্রকার এন্টিবায়োটিক। আপনি খেলেন ৭ টা। ব্যাকটেরিয়া মরলো ৭০ হাজার এবং আপনি সুস্থ হয়ে গেলেন। ৩০ হাজার ব্যাকটেরিয়া কিন্তু রয়েই গেল। এগুলো শরীরে ঘাপটি মেরে বসে জটিল এক কান্ড করল নিজেরা নিজেরা।

তারা ভাবল, যেহেতু এম্পিসিলিন দিয়ে আমাদের ৭০ হাজার ভাইকে হত্যা করা হয়েছে, আমাদেরকে এম্পিসিলিন প্রুফ জ্যাকেট পরতে হবে এবার। প্ল্যান করে থেমে থাকে না এরা, বরং সত্যি সত্যি জ্যাকেট তৈরি করে ফেলে ওই ব্যাকটেরিয়াগুলো। এরা বাচ্চা-কাচ্চাও পয়দা করে একই সময়ে। বাচ্চাদেরকেও সেই জ্যাকেট পরিয়ে দেয়।
এর ফলে যেটা হয়, পরের বার এম্পিসিলিন নামক এন্টিবায়োটিকটা আর কাজ করে না!

সবচেয়ে ভয়ংকর বিষয় হচ্ছে, জ্যাকেট পরা ব্যাকটেরিয়াগুলো কেবল ঐ ব্যাক্তির শরীরেই বসে থাকে না। তিনি যখন হাঁচি দেন, কাশি দেন, ব্যাকটেরিয়া গুলো ছড়িয়ে পড়ে পুরো এলাকায়। এক সময় পুরো এলাকায়ই আর ওই এন্টিবায়োটিক কাজ করে না। যারা খুব নিয়ম করে ওষুধ খান তারাও বিপদে পড়ে যান সবার সাথে।

আমরা খুব ভয়ংকর একটা সময়ের দিকে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছি দ্রুত। ব্যাকটেরিয়া আর তাদের বিভিন্ন 'জ্যাকেট'এর তুলনায় এন্টিবায়োটিকের সংখ্যা খুব বেশি না। অনেক এন্টিবায়োটিক এখন আর কাজ করে না, বাকিগুলোর ক্ষমতাও কমে আসছে। আমাদের বড় বড় হাসপাতাল থাকবে, সেখানে এফসিপিএস, এমডি, পিএইচডি করা ডাক্তাররা থাকবেন কিন্তু কারোরই কিছু করার থাকবে না। সামান্য সর্দিতেই রোগী মরে সাফ হয়ে যাবে।

উন্নত বিশ্বের চিকিৎসা ব্যবস্থা আলাদা। তারা নিয়ম মেনে ডাক্তারের পরামর্শ মতো ওষুধ খায়। বিপদে আছি আমরা। "মেডিসিনের বাইবেল" নামে পরিচিত ডেভিডসের বইয়েও আমাদের এই উপমহাদেশের উল্লেখ আছে আলাদা করে। অনেক ট্রিটমেন্টে বলা হয়েছে,
"This organism is registant against this Drugs in the subcontinent'' অর্থাৎ এই জীবাণুটি উপমহাদেশের এই ওষুধগুলোকে প্রতিরোধ করতে সক্ষম।

টিভি পত্রিকায় নানান বিষয়ে মানুষকে সচেতন করা হয়। বাথরুম করে হাত ধুতে হবে, কাশি হলে ডাক্তার দেখাতে হবে, নিরাপদ পানি খেতে হবে ইত্যাদি ইত্যাদি। কিন্তু এন্টিবায়োটিক নিয়ে কোনো কিছু আজও চোখে পড়েনি। অথচ এটা অন্যগুলোর চেয়ে বেশি জরুরি। এন্টিবায়োটিক কাজ না করলে এত সচেতনতা দিয়েও আর লাভ হবেনা। আগুন নিয়ে খেলছে ফার্মেসিওয়ালারা।

রোগী ফার্মেসীতে গিয়ে একটু জ্বরের কথা বললেই ফার্মেসিতে বসে থাকা সেই লোকটি দিয়ে দিচ্ছে Azithromycin, Cefixime, Cefuroxime অথবা Levofloxacin নামক কিছু নামকরা দামী এন্টিবায়োটিক, কিন্তুু কত দিন খেতে হবে সেটা না জানিয়ে সুন্দর করে বলে দেয় এই ওষুধটি ১ ডোজ খাবেন, সব রোগ ভালো হয়ে যাবে আর এই ভাবেই আস্তে আস্তে Resistance হচ্ছে সব এন্টিবায়োটিক।

চিকিৎসা ব্যবস্থার সাথে যারা জড়িত তাদেরকে এখনই ব্যাপারটা নিয়ে ভাবা উচিত। সবাইকে এন্টিবায়োটিকের সঠিক ব্যবহার বিষয়ে সচেতনতা বাড়াতে হবে। না হলে আমাদের ভবিষ্যত অন্ধকার।
