• Bangladesh has launched its first-ever national Skin Bank at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, offering a new lifeline for burn victims. With technical support from Singapore General Hospital, this facility has already collected over 4,500 sq cm of skin from 7 donors—mainly from discarded skin during obesity and hernia surgeries. Three successful transplants have already been carried out, offering critically needed treatment to patients like 8-year-old Mariam.

Doctors say the bank could significantly reduce fatalities by protecting burn wounds, preventing infection, and preserving vital fluids. Stored at –90°C, donor skin can be preserved for up to five years. Plans are underway to expand collection from deceased donors in the future, further enhancing this life-saving resource.
